You should definitely check with the landlords of the buildings you are looking at, because this can vary greatly from apartment to apartment. My apartment is about 400 square feet (small), I'm very energy conscience, and I pay on average about $20/month in electricity and $20 for water/sewer. I do not have a dishwasher or washer/dryer and have electric heat and stove (so no gas bill). Landlord covers garbage and recycling service. As for cable, I pay $15 for basic cable and then have a Netflix subscription on top of that. The next level of cable is Expanded Basic and will run about $54/month. Phone...nowadays, you have so many options on this, it's worth looking into a package deal or just having a cell phone and no landline. Internet is about $40-45 for cable, $35 for DSL, depending on your provider.

Here are some of the determining factors on your basic utilities:

~ How large your apartment is
~ How energy efficient your apartment is
~ How energy conscience you are (do you turn the water off when you brush your teeth, take short showers, turn off lights that you aren't using, can you live without the heat on all the time, etc)
~ What type of heat you have in the apartment (electric or gas) as well as what type of water heater you have (same), what time of cooking stove you have, etc.
~ Whether or not you have a washer/dryer in the apartment
~ Whether or not your landlord charges for a specific utility

We live in Tacoma - 2 adults and one 4 year old child.
We have an average sized 3 bedroom house.
Our average electricty and water bill is $250 for 2 months.
Garbage and sewer are about $50 each, also for 2 months.
So, that comes out to just under $200 per month for all 4 main utilities.
Of course, phone and cable or satellite depend often on what plans you get and how much you use them.
