When people from England decided to send a settlement to the New World they named the land Virginia in honor of Queen Elizabeth I. Now the first people from England settled at Roanoke Island which is now part of North Carolina but at that time they claimed all the land and named it Virginia. When that settlement failed and could not be found when another ship of people and supplies arrived they went back to England. Now in 1607 another group of people came to settle in what they called Virginia and the New World. They settled and called the settlement Jamestown after King James I. From there the land became settled more and more until Virginia became the size it is today.

The state of Virginia was named for Queen Elizabeth because she was known as the "Virgin Queen", a nickname I believe speaks for itself. Originally, when Elizabeth was alive, present day North Carolina was known as Virginia. I only know this because I am working on this at school right now. :)

Virginia is named after her, in honor of her being known as "The Virgin Queen" (she never married).
