Okay, I know this story is just there to give us a good laugh, but the way Morrisons are talking makes it seem like they're taking it seriously! I used to have to ID people buying alcohol, but I draw the line at demanding ID from OAPs. Ha ha!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/north_yorkshire/6296637.stm
An 87-year-old man was asked to prove he was over 21 when he tried to buy a bottle of sherry in a York supermarket.

The former Lord Mayor of York, Jack Archer, said he was shocked - but flattered - when asked the question by staff at Morrisons in Acomb. He said: "I don't look my age but I certainly don't look young enough to be in trouble for underage drinking."

Morrisons said staff had to ask anyone buying alcohol to confirm they were over 21, or provide proof of age.A Morrisons spokesman said: "We do not wish to cause offence and no disrespect is intended. We take our responsibility with regard to selling alcohol very seriously" yadda yadda yadda.

YES, BUT THE MAN IS 87. Lunacy!

Spensmum, I do understand that. I'm a retailer myself, so I'm used to asking people for ID. (I got ID'd all the time until I was about 27, which infuriated me, but that's not the point.)

I'm definitely NOT complaining about salespeople doing what they are told to. I just find it an incredibly stupid policy when someone is clearly a geriatric. Waste of time, money, and effort (and I say this as a Store Manager who also has to ensure such rules are followed)

Poor old Spensmum...don't know which joke is worst - your last question about Saddam's t-shirt (which had been aired many times) or this one?
Perhaps Morrisons have decided to jump onto New Labours' stance of giving everyone a criminal record before Uncle Tony disappears.
I was born in 1957...does that mean I can't buy your bag of fudge?
Top lass, Molly - talking of 'Olay', know a lass just down the road in Ipswich who told me when they changed the name from 'Oil of Ulay' (which she had been using since the late seventies) - to 'Olay', it didn't seem to be doing the same job - is this a 'woman thing', or is this true?

study on the information superhighway that BB10 is going to be the final one with winners from all the previous bb's plus some from movie star BB and the prize funds would be £1million. This has been the worst one ever. convey back Alex, Johnny and Kate - that one became the terrific.

Unfortunately we now live in an age when people are not allowed to think for themselves. Staff in all businesses are given instructions and are scared of doing anything that might require thinking.Common sense seems to have taken a back-seat to toe-ing the line, it seems we are becoming a nation of automatons.

It doesnt matter what age the person is. The law now states that the assistant can ask for proof of id to any of his/her customers. They can also refuse to serve if they dont provide the id required.Stupid as it sounds i know when the gent is 87. Its not just Morrisons that have the Task21 ruling most supermarkets practise this now.
