Why can't people take responsibility for themselves? Why do I have to pay for somebody's healthcare who isn't even working?

ok then, you know what, i'll just quit my job and have the government take care of me then, since this is going to be "so much" cheaper then what we are paying now in taxes, i won't have a job so i won't have to pay anything and still have free healthcare!

That's a big question in my mind as well. Currently, health care cost totals 17% of the GNP, or about $6400 for every man, woman, and child in the USA annually. That is a staggering amount of money. More than 4.5 times the amount of money is spent on health care than national defense.
Taking on health care would make the government responsible for paying out more than 25% of the GNP. It would take a tax increase of almost 5 times the current level to pay the bills.
Is the American worker really for that kind of an increase in taxes? I'm not.

Ok, so you need to do a little research on this subject. We are paying for it now. The CEO of General Motors has said that $1500 of every new car is the cost of health care for its employee's and retiree's, I am sure that this also applies to other industry's, so just about everything you buy has this added "tax" added on. You might not see it but it is there. This in turn makes it very hard for true American company's to compete in a global economy. Most other country's have universal health care and the company's do not have to pay this cost up front and it is not hidden in the cost of the product.
As far as why we need it, there are currently 47 million Americans without access to affordable health care. This is not only morally wrong but it is costly to the rest of us. We pay for these people through our insurance premiums. The cost of health care has out stripped inflation by double figure percentages in the last few years and fewer and fewer employers are offering this benefit. Next is the myth that people in Canada have to wait 6 months to see a Dr. in an emergency situation that is just not true. If you ask just about any Canadian if they would trade their health care system for ours you will get a little laugh and a resounding no. Please, do a little research before you get totally against this much needed legislation.
Edit: I know I have just submited the pro's to UHC and I do know that there are some con's but cost of it is not one of those con's. We in the U.S. pay the most for health care then any place else in the world and yet we rank 14 or 15 behind in the quality of the care we receive.

Um we are all already paying for an extremely broken system which costs three times more per person per capita as much as any 1st world Health system on the planet. It's extremely inefficient. Universal health care wouldn't cost that much in real terms because the insurance companies are charging way too much. Where I live, if you want to purchase your own health insurance for just 2 people, it costs just over $1000 a month. THAT"S MINIMUM. With my husband and I, we get it through his work, and about $250 a month is taken out of his pay check per month for it, plus what the employer pays. If you have kids, it's alot more. And, alot of companies are not going to pay for their employees insurance any more. Even the auto industry is cutting health insurance to their employees and retirees. It's effecting the bottom line of companies and small businesses. The insurance companies and HMO's are ripping off the american people. Please tell me how much universal health care is going to cost per month? Do you really think the taxes to pay for it would take that much out of your pay check per month? No, they wouldn't, because it would take the middle man (the insurance companies) out of it.
In addition: We already pay for the people's healthcare who are unemployed, it's called Medicare. If we don't pay for unemployed people's healthcare, it would be devastating on the population if someone who is poor or unemployed came down with a very virolent strain of a disease such as T.B which is reserging, or Malaria, or some other kind of tropical disease brought on by climate change and warming of the planet. We are already seeing it in the form of West Nile virus, and an extremely strong form of T.B making it's way back around the globe, and let's not forget the Bird Flu. Protecting others health, protects everyone. No person is an island.

It's not just Obama calling for this, but many members of both Houses, including some Republicans. You are already paying with your tax dollars for health care programs that are ineffective and broken. If you're going to have to pay anyway, and you do, wouldn't you rather pay for a system that actually works?

That's life. I don't want to pay for corporate welfare, but I don't have a choice either. Live with it. Every one of the Dems and one of the Rep. running for Prez are pushing for universal health care.
BTW, 15 billions dollars worth of taxes go to pay for the uninsured under our current system.

Good question. We were just discussing this issue at my job. Seems that question is very much on everyone's mind. I'd like to know the answer myself.
Of course we don't have any info on a proposal, but to me, "universal health care" sounds pretty much government regulated health care. I think it needs to remain private.

well think about it this way, if there was a national health care plan, than employers wouldn't have to provide it, which means that you would probably get a raise.

the people who will be paying for this is.....anyone who has a job and works for a living.
most democrats in the U.S. today are really socialists, they want us to become like the U.K. or France.
yeah that will work
my Boss's mother in law used to come over to the U.S. once a year to have her health issues resolved over here because the medical system in the U.K. is so hosed up. they can put a band aid on a boo boo, but that is about it
more taxes and bigger government, that will fix our problems

I didn't hear of this, but if he did make this statement he has gone way down on my meter. Gah, we can pay back the damage the republicans do, I doubt we will ever pay off the damage the dems want to inflict.
