Upon booting up my pc, it emits one long beep and two shorter ones.

The motherboard has an AMI Bios. It is manufactured by ASUS. Looking up the error, it appears to have a "Failure in video system. An error was encountered in the video BIOS ROM, or a horizontal retrace failure has been encountered."

Does anyone know how I can fix this?

The screen won't turn on, so I can't update the bios. Its a brand new machine - came in the post earlier this week, from arbico.co.uk.

You either have a trashed video card or the monitor took a dump. Find another monitor and try it.

Haven't heard of one of these for years! If it's not a laptop, try switching off, taking out the video card and reseating it and then switching back on. If still no joy then send it back to the PC manufacturer. It is extremely rare for the Video BIOS to require updating - and if there is a new version available it is usually from a third party and will render your warranty useless. Could also be the video memory itself. If the video card is 'onboard', i.e. part of the motherboard itself, then it's duff. Oh, and it won't be the monitor because this is effectively 'invisible' to the BIOS.

My advice - send it back for replacement.

Your problem might be a bit more simple than all that...

disconnect from the mains, remove the cover, and look for any loose connections... especially look at the motherboard, make sure all the jumpers are in place (little bits that clip over pins), these can sometimes become dislodged during transportation (even moving around a room)

If not, then I'd get in touch with the manufacturer

the BIOS is the least of your worries, a computer hanging on a POST screen has many reasons. it could be that your memory module is broken, or didn't you say that the trouble started when you did a CHKDSK on your hdd if so then upon bootup do you hear strange noises coming from your hdd, sometimes POST hangs when trying to detect a broken hdd. last one to check is if your power is sufficient, a computer running on a deteriorating power supply can have many problems including the one you stated above.

Go onto your computer's web site and search the knowledge base for known problems with the video. Chances are they already have a BIOS upgrade or new driver for it. Good Luck

try putting in a spare AGP or PCI video card in there to see if that will allow you to see anything.

If it works, then you can play withe the video setting on the motherboard. Try selecting "Restore Default Settings" then reset with your onboard card. see if that works!

godd luck.
