so, he had $56.75 on the 15th and $87.37 on the 20th. First, you need to find the difference between the two.
$87.37
-$56.75
-----------
$30.62
You must figure out where the $30.62 came from.
You know that $5.00 came from check A. Subtract that from the total difference of $30.62
$30.62
-$ 5.00
----------
$25.62
You know another $13.25 came from check B. Subtract that from the rest of the difference.
$25.62
-$13.25
-----------
$12.37
Therefore, Carlos Martin deposited $12.37 into his account between march 15th and march 20th.
because that is what is left of the difference after you account for the total amount deposited in checks.
:) hope that helps

Assuming Carlos did not add incorrectly:
The bank and Carlos have a difference of
$5.00 + $13.85 = $18.85
on March 15th. This difference is from 2 checks that have not yet been cashed, so the bank's total is greater than Carlos's on March 15th. Thus, Carlos's total on March 15th is
$56.75 - $18.85 = $37.90
Carlos adds a certain amount to get his balance of $87.37 on March 20th
$37.90 + x = $87.37 -> x = $49.47
Carlos deposited $49.47

The bank did not have the two checks or the deposit(s) when they calculated the balance. Subtracting the checks from the bank's balance,
$56.75 - $5.00 - $13.25 = $38.50
If Carlos' balance is accurate, the deposit(s) must have been $87.37 - $38.50 = $48.87
