I sometimes go out with people from my residential college to clubs/pubs/bars...the difficulty I have is, I always find myself socially awkward/isolated & I feel compelled to talk to ppl or join a group of ppl chatting but I juz cannot seem to get connected with ppl no matter how hard I tried...does anyone know why and how I should respond in this kinda social setting (I seldom go to these places btw)? It is quite frustrating...could it be cultural too (most of these ppl are Aussies & I'm Asian btw; I understand some Aussies can be quite cliquey)?

Sounds like you may not have anything in common with these people or even find them terribly interesting. There's nothing wrong with that, but if you want to get involved in a conversation, listen and ask questions. Ask people to explain what they're talking about. Even if you're not interested. When you ask people to talk about themselves they automatically find you pleasant and comfortable to be around. You can talk to me if you want :)

Better not to even try and figure it out! Just find your own way and be content. People were not meant to be exposed to social events. There are many personality "types" Here is a link to a page that I found. It sounds very normal to me- I'm socially awkward too- by choice.
