msn - no
windows messenger - no
Media Player - not NEEDED, but unless you have another media player (WinAmp, RealPlayer, etc) I'd leave it there.
Tour - No

All these ARE in the control panel actually. When you open the "Add / Remove programs" icon, there is an option on the left "Add / Remove Windows Components." The programs are listed in there, and you can safely remove all those you mentioned.

You definitely need Windows Media Player... Well you don't NEED any of those programs, but I suggest keeping Media Player. It plays CD's, MP3's, videos, etc. You don't need MSN explorer or Windows Messenger. Those are for the MSN service. You obviously already have an internet provider, so you wouldn't really need MSN. Tour Windows XP is just something built into Windows that shows you the features. You can easily remove things from the Start menu by right-clicking on it and selecting "remove from this list"

Windows messenger is the messenger program for chatting to people so it isn't essential, same with the media player as thats just for listening to muxic and that however a lot of sites use this so it's best to leave it alone.

Instead od ledeting them why not go into msconfig and disable them from starting you can then safely delete the shortcuts or place them all in a new folder so they're out the way.
You never know you may want to use these in the future

You don't need them, but windows doesn't let you get rid of them (although you should have a look in control panel>add&remove programs>add&remove windows components, just in case there is an option for some of these.

As for these showing up on your start menu, if they bother you, you could always just right click on each one and select delete. This will not delete the programs, only the shortcuts to them. But at least you won't have to see them.

No, it only makes Microsoft Windows systems run a little faster. This is because the Microsoft Windows operating system relies on a badly written set of filesystems, such as NTFS. These file systems essentially "fragment" files, and "defragmenting" them helps to put them how they should have been in the first place. So, if you're running Mac OS X, Linux or anyt other OS - don't worry about it! If you're running Windows, navigate using the "Start" menu to "System Tools".

You do not need the icons on your desktop, but I would not remove the programs because they are windows system files, and may lead to computer problems down the road!
