I am going for my 20 week U/S to an offsite facility. My dr wont be there but an US tech will be doing my U/S. Are the techs trained in different fields? I have only been for US for problems before pregnancy (cysts) and the resuts have to be sent back to my dr. Will the tech be able to identify problems and tell me with certainty how my baby is doing?

Yes they are trained better than the Doctors...That's why doctors never do them...Mother of 5 all techs with every ultrasound...If they would see something most of the time they consult with another tech than tell the doctor..

Yes ultrasound techs are trained , they are required to have a certain college degree. A tech will say things like this is the baby or everythings looking good, do not expect to hear anything negative if a problem is seen a parinatologist will view the digital file & report it to you OB, usually you can call your OB within 24 to 48 hours when they get the report to make sure everything is AoK. However if there is a problem seen you can usualy tell in the change of deminer in the tech. Good Luck

They are trained but they can not tell you if they find anything wrong and or abnormal. That's the Dr's job. My tech was nice and said everything looked fine that the Dr would go over the results with me. I called the Dr's office and the nurse said if something is wrong they would call right away, I got a message from my Dr saying all was fine. Good luck! Just relax and enjoy the wonderful first view of your baby, I cried! It was awesome!

26 weeks with my first!

The ultrasound technologists generally have to go to 3 years of school prior to doing ultrasound work. The Registered ultrasound techs have to take a very difficult exam to become registered. The ultrasound techs usually don't discuss results with patients. Sometimes they will tell you the babies sex if you the parent wants to know. The technologists job is to image your baby completely for your Dr to interpret at a later time. Good luck with your pregnancy

They are trained. However, my experience has been that they send the results back to the doctor. I had several ultrasounds with my last pregnancy. I always had to go to the local hospital for my US. The tech wouldn't tell me anything. They always had a radiologist read it before I left to make sure they didn't need anymore pics, but would send the results to the Dr.

Only the Dr can give results of tests not the tech. Yes of course they are trained to do their job, but not give out information to you. That's the Dr's job! You'd have a cow if the tech told you something incorrectly, and if there is a problem they can not give medical advice.

Yes they are trained, but the doc will also look at the ultrasound and then get back to you about any problems. The ultrasound tech will probably not tell you anything if there is something wrong. But a doc will also look at them.

of course techs are trained!! the training is actually quite extensive and is packed into a short amount of time. they always have a doctor look at the results as well just in case something is overlooked but ultrasounds are used for EVERYTHING...not just babies and your doctor knows more about your body and your pregnancy and what's going on. but the tech is certainly able to tell you honestly how everything is going. just relax and everything is going to be just fine.

Ultrasound technision are very well trained. They know exactly what they see. However, they are not allowed to tell you anything. Some facilities will tell you the sex of the baby and that is it. It is only there job to preform the ultrasound for the doctor. They are not allowed to diagnose you. That is the doctors job only.

Yes, they have to go through special training in order to be a tech. You will notice how precise and highly skilled they are when they do the procedure, spending several minutes taking down measurements and notes. Don't worry!
