Read "They Were White and They Were Slaves: The Untold History of the Enlslavement of Whites in Early America" if you are truly interested in it. There is too much to explain. People only think that there were black slaves but they are wrong. There have been slaves in EVERY race. Pick up the book or order it from the library. It's pretty interesting.

In ancient times Romans / Italics kept slaves which were in many cases people from conquered regions further north in Europe, such as Germans. Some of them became freedmen and / or eventually served in or were conscripted into the legions or royal "bodyguard" units, or what have you, but , yes there were a good deal of Germanic / Celtic slaves kept in Italy in ancient times, sure. Probably , it's fair to guess, some were sold at slave auctions to other Mediterranean peoples as well, wealthy Greeks or Libyans or what have you. Ancient Roman matrons used to actually pay a pretty price (at the time) for "wigs" made out of the hair of slave girls, this was because the hair was oftentimes in colors which were not found very often in Italy and thus considered quite rare or "exotic". Such as the cut off locks of a red-headed slave girl , for example, or a true blonde even.

I'm sure the Barbarians of Europe (the Vikings and what not) made slave out of the people they conquered. BUT on the scale like the Africans or Chinese or Indians...NO!!! They were the slave masters.

Even in the US, endentured servants were white, slaves black and slaves go treated FAR worse.

Rome, the middle east, etc. All races have been enslaved at least one time or another. In ancient times, slavery was not so much a racial or ethic distinction. It was more of an occupation, similar to that of a live in servant. Many times there were opportunities to move out of slavery. Slavery as was conducted in the New World however was quite brutal. Slaves were no longer servants who were respected as humans but laborers used to plow, pick, and reap vast plantations with no opportunity to be free. Ethnically and culturally distinct, they were easier to dehumanize and exploit.
