LOL -- sorry, I tend to be a bit of that kind myself, sometimes. You can nod and smile a lot -- or gently let the person know you really don't need ALL the details, all the time. It is probably just a manifestation of anxiety and insecurity, so try a bit of sympathy and forebearance. Deep breathing and a thoughful expression while thinking of something entirely different might help some, too! Good luck (and thanks for trying to avoid the rudeness).

I think most people who have a story for everything are insecure. They think they have to impress everyone with their wealth of knowledge. If it's a friend, tell him/her that they don't have to to impress you and tell you a story everytime they give you an answer. If it's not a friend, I think the only thing to is try to avoid "getting them started". Try to stick to yes or no questions, and avoid telling them stories that they think they have to top. Good luck!

It's okay to listen to them for a moment or at least look like you're listening, but once you've had enough just politely interrupt and say that you need to excuse yourself for a moment to go do something or something as simple as (as someone else suggested) you thought your phone was ringing and you want to check. Most people should catch on to know that they've said enough, but in a case where they continue on and on afterward then it's perfectly okay to just say "Okay, that's enough" but in a polite manner.

Once they start up, just sort of drift away, maybe let them know that you have to use the ladies room or you hear your phone ringing. If they are smart they may get the hint. But you don't have to stand around and listen to them.
