I think you can do that with almost any destination (well not as much at the beach) European capitals are my favorite. Great old architecture.
Airfare to Munich is quite reasonable since it is a hub, and it is a good central point to explore other destinations. (salzburg, rothenburg, erfurt-yeah thats a great city, farther afield to berlin or colonge)
If youve not done europe before paris is great and london is easier for new travelers since the language barrier is not there (its not bad elsewhere either)
In the US Philly and the surrounding are are my favorite "history" destination. Independence hall, liberty bell, an EXCELLENT classic art museum, a mint, the original mint, short drive to valley forge, USS Constitution?(Ithin k that is there) amish sites in the countryside, and much more!

Im a history buff too, unfortunately, most historial place in the Phils are not well preserved by the government.Mostly are converted to modern commerical areas instead of restoring the old glory..
You can try intramuros in Manila, Corregidor in Cavite, Vigan in Ilocos Sur, Zambonga, Cebu..But it tell you, its not worth visiting..You try museums like the National Museum and the Metropolitan Museum in Central bank..It will help too..

You have to visit Vigan and Bantay, you don't have to worry these two places are just neighbors, you just need a tricycle, if you don't have a car or a bicycle. You don't need hours to go from these place to that place. You know, Vigan and Bantay is the best place to visit when you are in the Philippines. It has beaches, the heritage, you can ride in a calesa while you are looking at those antique houses and you may also buy souvenirs, while in Bantay, you can see the bell tower, it is beautiful. you can take your very own picture beside it you can also climb the stairs in the bell tower. Baluarte is also a nice place, it has animals and it is owned by our governor.

As far as history is concerned, you must visit Intramuros, Manila wherein you will see the memorabilla of our National Hero, his dungeon cell, as well as his hometown in Calamba, Laguna. Then you go and see the beauty of nature. That is if you are a Nature Lover, proceed to Pagsanjan Falls and Mt. Makiling in Laguna; Banaue Rice Terraces in Ifugao; Burnham Park and Mines View Park in Baguio City; Hundred Islands in Pangasinan; Taal Volcano and Lake and Palace in the Sky in Batangas; Chocolate Hills and Tarsiers in Bohol; Boracay in Aklan; and many other beautiful toourist spots here. Oh, also Corregidor Island in Cavite with its historical tunnel.
Well, if you want to go there, please do not hesitate to contact me and I will be your tour guide ;)
Hope to hear from you soon, Mr. Historian. Have a nice day!!!!!

i love history too. i really want to go to greece, rome, china, mid east etc.. but in the philippines youll love cebu, ilocos, the northern provinces where the igorots live, mindanao is a good place to learn about islamization in the philippines. much of the visayas regions have great spanish influences..
if you go to cebu, you might want to go the the cebuano studies center at the univ of san carlos. theyve books about cebu and the philippines..but then you can always find info on the internet.
