No. I would build a non-profit organization to provide for them ... to provide a means for them to establish or re-establish their dignity and self-respect. I believe that people should be allowed to earn what they receive...not just say an empty (and sometimes resentful) 'Thank you' and go on their way.
Ever heard the lesson about the hungry man who asked a fisherman for food? Instead of 'giving' him a fish (which he had plenty of...), he gave him a pole and line and a lure and some bait. He taught him how to use these things to provide for himself and others. Because had he merely handed him a fish...he would be helpless again the next day; this way, he could meet his own needs the next day without begging...without lessening his own self-respect...without being made feel humble to the fisherman--again.
Technically, most people who receive 'millions' suddenly are unaware of how easy it is to effectively develop a means to provide for the poor to have better at their own esteem...rather than at the income tax advantage of giving it to a pre-existing organization that may not be as efficient as they could be.
It is acceptable to give a percentage to the poor from an income tax perspective; however, if the acceptable percentage is exceeded, it is of no sensible advantage. Now, from a spiritual perspective, it could be quite enriching; however, using it to continue to provide to those who need a way..a means...a good opportunity to obtain gainful employment would be better from my perspective.
Give them tools and meaningful instruction on how to use them -- not handouts.

Give it to the poor directly...most likely not.
I would however start up some foundations to help them Mainly educational and mental health related.
Educational would not even be direct grants for the cost of tuition and books, yet things like transportation, child care ect. And the only people who would get it are the truely poor...those busting thier asses to work yet because they work they dont qualify for any help from the state. There are federal pell grants to pay for tution and books but I know from personal experience how hard it can be if your car breaks down or you get a disconnect on the electric, yet you make $3.00 too much each moth to qualify for help.
Mental health services is something else I would help fund for the simple fact thats something we seriously lack today. Many of your homeless people are people with schizophrenia who just dont have any access to good quality mental health care.

i would get a soup kitchen in my town BC they do not have on BC of the city council members they think we do not have bums but of course we do all over. they if they make a soup kitchen they think all the bums from other areas would come here which is not so. i would try to convince them other wise and i would try to build one or get a building that already exist put showers beds and try to buy clothes for the people who show up and i would send them to try to get jobs BC i know how hard it is being homeless and getting a job BC without an address and home phone and obviously you are not the cleanest person BC you live on the street there is no way in getting a job. So that is what i would do i would try to help them get cleaned up. have somewhere they can eat sleep and get showers. It would be a home for them until they can get back on their feet. They would have to be clean no drugs if drugs then i will ask if they want help to get off them and i would send them free of charge to get help somewhere and then they may come back and start the process for getting back on there feet. That is what i would do if i won millions and i also would share it with my family members.
if i could not start my own soup kitchen then i would give to the one that exist in the other town which is an half an hour to an hour away from where is stay. or other legitimate organization

I would be reluctant to do so. A donation right to someone who is destitute may not go to where it can to the most good.
A donation through an organization could get eaten up in overhead costs and (God forbid) someone who pockets the donation so it goes for a trip to the Bahamas and not for some truly needy person.
There is also the concern of general mishandling through ignorance or carelessness so even with "money to burn" as it were, there is still a great deal of reluctance to donate without a full and hoenst accountability as to how it is being used

If I won a million I'd hire an accountant to manage the windfall and recommend strategies for lowering the tax bit. I'm sure part of the strategy would be to give to the poor.

If I suddenly came upon a million dollars, I ould donate some money to St. Jude's Children Research Hospital because they need money to further research cures to help our children. I would donate to different shelters. It is ashamed how people can judge the homeless, but they have not or will not lift a finger to help. I would donate money to some Neonatal Intensive Care Units. This would help them become more modernized so preemies can have a better chance for survival(like my son). Finally, I would pay tithes to my church. I love to give cheerfully to god. Without him, I would be nothing. I would not have my health, strength, or my kids. God is my all and all. To answer your question. Yes, I would help the poor. I would help my family and myself with what I have left!

yea, to some of my poor friends. I have a few friends who are married & have a child but due to financial troubles beyond their control they are forced to live with their parents who don't really have much money either :-( With one couple, the husband is 22, the wife is 23 & they keep getting screwed over in every job they have cause they refuse to get walked all over & treated like crap cause of their age. The wife actually got fired from the daycare she worked at (while 5 months pregnant!) because the director didn't like her cause she didn't suck up like the rest of the older snobby ladies there. The other couple, the husband is almost 30 & keeps getting passed over for some jobs because they won't give him a chance due to his minor record he has with the law from when he was really young. If you look at his record, he hasn't done anything in years & they still don't give him a chance. GRRRR!

I would absolutely give a portion of the winnings to charities
that were proven to distribute almost all of it to people in
need. If you were poor before you recieved the windfall,
there is a chance you would want to distance yourself
from your former situation and have all the things you've
never had. The other reasons people wouldn't give back
are selfishness, greed, lack of compassion, and a very
loose grip on the realities of their fellow man.

I wouldn't just "give" money to the poor, I would sink a large sum of money into a high interest bank account for each individual, so they could live off the interest. This would help them out on more of a long term situation.

I would like to think I would, but honestly I am not sure. By the time I give so much to my family and pay off the house, set up a fund for my daughter, etc, I am just not sure what I would do with the rest. I would like to give to numerous charities that are near to my life (diabetes foundation and heart and stroke to name but 2). Hopefully I get a chance to find out :)
