Trafalgar Square - they can climb the lions but they can't paddle in the fountain!

Art galleries in Trafalgar Square

Covent Garden - great shops, restaurants and street entertainment

Leicester Square - cinemas

Lots of theatres - why not book a show?

A Thames River trip from Charing Cross pier

Walk down the Mall - see Buckingham Palace, Horseguards etc.

There are literally thousands of things for you to do!
Enjoy your trip

It's right opposite Trafalgar square with it's fountains and giant lions. Behind Trafalgar Square is the National Gallery which has Van Gogh's Sunflowers painting, next to that is the National Portrait Gallery (all museums and galleries in London are free). Further on there is Covent Garden which is nice in the evening with street performers and continental style pavement cafes and an indoor market. The IMAX cinema is over in Waterloo (just walk over the bridge to the South Bank. Also on the South Bank is the London Eye for a birds eye view of London. If the teenagers like arcades then there is a giant arcade centre at the Trocadero centre between Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus. You could book a theatre ticket, Evita is playing on the Strand which is about a 5 minute walk from your hotel. Most of theatreland is also within walking distance.

To be honest, most of the main sights of London are within walking distance of Charing Cross. You could check out some of the museums (the Science Museum is a good way to kill some time - I spent a full day there with my family when I was about thirteen and loved it) or an art gallery. It's quite cheap to travel by bus or tube when you're in London if you run out of things to see and do.

It depends how far you want to walk. The closest landmark is Trafalgar Square, not far away is Covent Garden and The Thames I recommend you get a map and plot a route because you can see a lot in one short walk. You are in the west end too so there is no shortage of night life (clubs, theatres, restaruants, you name it, strip clubs - well maybe not) head into Leicester Sq, China Town and Soho or back to Covent Garden.

Walk them down The Strand and Fleet Street to St. Paul's Cathedral.
Go inside and make them sit/kneel in a Pew for Half an Hour.
