If you just google "whooping cranes" you'll find tons of information to help you. You might want to look at how biologists have increased the size of the whooping crane population...They were very nearly extinct not too long ago, and the population has been increased steadily with a lot of help...

You could do your project on how people feed and take care of the chicks with a puppet that looks like an adult whooping crane. They make sure the chicks do not imprint on people, and when the chicks get old enough the people dress up in whooper suits and run and teach them to eat and fly.

they're rather large
They follow ultra lite airplanes
there are two nesting sites and two winter rookeries one in TExas the other near Crystal River Florida
Thier sound is like a loud whoop. whoop
