Theres a few things that may make this problem occur. I have the older PS2, the thick one, and when it said no data I had to open up the PS2 and clean the drive out myself with some air duster (not the best option but it works). Then I cleaned the loading tray's tracks that it runs on, just to make sure the tray goes all the way into the drive.
Some older PS2 games that had a blue disc that the game was put on were to light compared to most DVDs, causing them to spin of balance making it hard for the drive to read it (mostly this error comes up as "Disc Read Error"). If its a game with a blue bottom just take 2 VERY small pieces of tape and near the hole in the center and tape them down so they are even with one another. This will help the disc get heavier helping it from spinning of balance again.
If it is still saying no data insert a memory card that you know has data, if the error is still occuring its time to buy a new PS2. The system is a very nice paper weight. But if the memory card is read then you know its just the drive. I hope my "repair" ideas help you. It worked for my PS2.

Perhaps the disc isn't compatible with the PS2 (e.g. maybe it is a pc game disc), maybe the PS2 has been damaged somehow - perhaps to the laser through overuse in a prolonged period or rough cleaning, or perhaps the disc is just scratched? Have you tried playing other discs on the PS2 to rule out a problem with the machine itself. If other discs are fine then either this one is incompatible or it is damaged. Also remember some DVDs and PS games and some PS2s are region specific (i.e. if they have been imported from another country then they may only play discs or play on machines from the same region). If all else fails, give Sony a call (telephone number on their website concerning the PS2). Hope this helps.

I'm afraid it sounds as if the laser has died or faulty I assume you've tried more than one disc so unfortunately it looks like a new consul for you, thats the down side, the upside is ,you can get a new one online for as little as £50 or $100 ,or you could splash out like i did and buy a ps3

sounds like the lasers gone... if your ps2 is chipped, it's probably burnt out...

buy an xbox to replace it... if you can afford it, buy an xbox360 instead
