The party will be outside on the patio. The DJ will be under a patio cover. There will be both boys and girls. There may be 30-40 of them! We also have a big yard to work with. I am trying to be very creative on a small budget.

Believe it or not the kids might still like one of those big bounce thingys! They don't cost too much to rent. Or, you can get some of those string lights to decorate the patio cover, tie balloons to your shrubbery in random fashion. I did the same thing when my daughter turned 17 in August. Our setup was just like yours, patio cover w/DJ, large yard what to do. I rented the bouncer and the kids were in it all night! I also rented a cotton candy machine and both things only cost $100! One more thing if you can stand it, see if you can find a local garage band that will play for free. My daughter knew of one, and I have to admit they were really, really good. Only problem was, they were really, really loud, so we did have a police visitation.
