Your mailman does not pick up the "blue boxes",This is done by the Collection Unit, mailman used to pick up boxes but they no longer do so,it is done only by the collection unit now.
What you did is a Federal Crime and you can be arrested for destruction of the U.S. Mail. How many people's mortgage payments will be late,or not delivered,or electric bills etc.
The mailman will not get fired for this,he will report this incident and the postal inspectors will investigate it.The next knock on your door might be the police .Good luck with that.
Also,if your screen door is not secure for a dog. Your dog could have broken the screen door, and bit the mailman and you could have been sued, and your insurance would have gone up.
Your mailman did the right thing to defend himself in this instance, dog attacks is a very serious job related injury issue with the Postal Service.
You should shut your inside door the next time you see the mailman walking to your door to deliver the mail.
You might have to get a post office box if your mailman reports your vicious dog.

I guess i'd have to know more about the dog and his behavior. I have personally seen dogs go through a screen door so i can say from experience YES your dog could have bit him (assuming your dog isn't 5lbs or less). The fact is, biting in general, and biting of mailmen is a very big problem in this country. It's not just about avoiding getting people hurt, it's also about the perception of danger. Mailmen, or anyone else approaching your door for legal reasons should not have to be worried about the potential for violence from your dog or from anything else. I suspect that many have the opinion that they should mace first, ask questions later. Which i can certainly understand given the number of dog bites, especially with mailmen, they get every year. I certainly would not want my dog maced but i also know that if he were on one side of a screen door, the mailman would be correct to be worried.

Not good thinking Batman, a lot of innocents were affected by your actions and it didn't really hurt him because the bloke's boss is going to know the mailbox was sabotaged, so isn't going to blame him. Surely a more direct approach would have been better, ie, confronting the tosser and giving him a good macing followed by a nice smack in the mouth. True you might go to jail, but that holds true for the other thing aswell.

You are a jerk!
He won't get in trouble for bringing in ice cream covered mail. He will be inconvenienced, but he will wash his hands and be done with it. On the other hand, you probably ruined several pieces of mail that were important to the people sending and receiving it. Aside from the fact that tampering with the US Mail is a federeal offense, you handled the situation terribly.
I feel bad for your dog, but you may be in for more trouble than it was worth.

I agree that is sucks for the mailman, however you've ruined a lot of people's mail. some of the mail won't get sent b/c the addresses are illegible. What if your mortgage payment was late b/c someone dumped chocolate on it???
In the future, try complaining to the post office. I bet if you took pictures of the dog, the screen door, etc., they would reprimand him for cruelty to animals.

Harry you are an idiot. It is not his mail you destroyed, but your neighbors and fellow citizens. Now some bill won't be paid on time and will be accessed a late charge and some 7 year old won't get a check from grandma on her birthday...If he maced your dog through the screen door, call the police and his supervisor, bring him to small claims court, harass him not his work

No; you ruined other people's mail. You are a real jerk.
A mature response would have been to talk to the mailman and explain that your dog could not possibly have bit him.
Grow up.

That's bad news, you tampered with U.S. mail; a felony. A better solution would have been to report his abuse of your dog to his supervisor and to file a formal complaint if that did not get any action.
