a balk or catchers interference or running out of the baseline can be considered a violation. Also, when a ball bounces in play and a fan grabs it, it is a ground rule double or triple. I know those are not exactly penalties, but it is the best I could come up with. There is also throwing your glove at a ball or throwing the ball in the stands.

I think the biggest penalty (and downfall) of baseball is the arrogance of the umpires, even during the wrong call. Calling a ball a strike, calling a foul a home run, or calling a balk whenever convenient. Since you can't even talk to an umpire without getting thrown out, it just cheapens the game.

when you mean "penalize", how can you penalize a player/team which affects the next few plays/possessions? you cant play shorthanded, there is no "free strike" (as free throw), free/penalty swing (as in kick or shot), the pitcher doesnt throw an additional 5 feet back (like football penalties) or anything of that sort.
catchers interference rarely happens. fan interference isnt a penalty, the runner/batter ends up where he most likely would have if the fan kept his hands behind the wall.

I agree with all you with balks, interference, leaving base to soon, running out of the base line, batting out of order, not staying in battr box if you are the bater and what not, but there is one that is not quite a penalty but in a way you can say that it is against the batting team and the defensive team...... its called the infield fly rule where when it is called the batter is automatically called out to prevent a double play but then again the defensive side doesnt have a chance to get the double play, but there must be less than 2 outs and then runners on 1st and 2nd or bases loaded.

There are many penalties in baseball example A "Bulk" It is called when a pitcher winds up for the pitch but does not throw the ball.
Penalty extra base for the runner and a ball for the batter...
How about taking out a manager or player out of the dugout. if he keeps on complaining, a misconduct... Fighting? thats one penalty.

Yes...there are balks (which is when the pitcher does something to deceive the runner). There are penalities (ejections) for charging the mound, arguing balls & strikes, etc.
But no penalties that deduct points, or give the batter a strike, etc.

of course there are no "fouls" or "penalties" like in basketball and football, but you can get ejected from the game for certain things, also fined and/or suspended.

There are - however, the only real penalty is getting kicked out of the game.
