Ok...I'll just bet that you are pronouncing it "fox pass". Am I right?
How do I know? Take a guess...Yep, I did until I was 10 or 11 and my snit of a cousin, Miss Fancy-Pants, who happened to be taking French, corrected me. Anyhow, it just means you messed up, made a mistake. Like asking a heavy woman when the baby is due and finding out she's not pregnant. That there is a "fox pass"...

You commit a faux pas by doing or saying something that is "not done" or "not said" - a socially unacceptable or inappropriate thing. Like wearing white shoes after Labour Day, considered a fashion faux pas. Inviting someone to dinner, but not inviting his/her spouse. That kind of thing. It's not like making a mistake like losing your keys, it's making a social mistake.

A faux pas, (IPA /ˌfoʊˈpɑː/, plural: faux pas /ˌfoʊˈpɑː(z)/) (French for false step) is a violation of accepted, although unwritten, social rules. Faux pas vary widely from culture to culture and what is considered good manners in one culture can be considered a faux pas in another. For example, in English-speaking Western countries it is usually considered a nice gesture to bring a bottle of wine when going to someone's house for dinner. In France, however, this is considered insulting as it suggests the hosts are unable to provide their own good wine. However, bringing flowers to the hostess is rarely a faux pas, although one sometimes needs to be careful what kind of flowers to bring.

It means false step in french. It is basically a violation of unwritten rules or something that goes against standards of etiquette - basically, something kind of rude. For example, it is considered polite to take a bottle of wine if invited to someone's house for dinner (unless you are in France), but it would be a faux pas to take a bottle of wine if you are having dinner at, for example, the house of a recovering alcoholic.....
