You would think in a field like architecture, imagination is required but CREATIVITY is more important. Most architects have to work within a budget and work with their clients to come up with creative solutions to meet their client's needs. It is alot easier when an architect can work on a blank canvas...build a whole new structure but when they have an existing structure that they have remodel - they need their creativity to do some extraordinary things.

Most architects just deal with the other shell of the buildings along with engineers. They usually bring in designers to help them with the details of the interior space. THAT's where the imagination comes in - in my opinion. It is a team effort - architects get too much credit for what they do.

Imagination is one important element as is creativity but certainly not the culmination of what it is to be an architect...

You need the left brain attributes just as much if not more... Imagination is often impractical and without that, all you get is a bunch of really cool looking buildings that leak a lot when it rains... As in the case of F.L. Wright...

Really imaginative, but in some cases completely impractical and therefore structurally unsound!

But at the same time... How could they have ever invented the Aquaducts without imagination?

I work in the engineering field, and Architects are highly lacking in imagination. Only rarely do you see an Architect try something new these days, and if they do design outside of the box, they are generally criticized for it. As it usually causes a rise in building costs and engineering time.

Well, no, because to even become an architect in the first place, you need to exhibit creativity and imagination in your school projects. So, there really ARE no architects without any imagination.

absolutely! can you be a painter without imagination? absolutely! you can learn to paint and become quite proficient at it and possibly make quite a bit of money. personally, i think this type of imagination comes from knowledge. if you are schooled in a subject (e.g. painting, architecture, etc.) you will have the tools you need to be a member of that profession. you will have the tools you need to advance in that profession as you have more and more experience actually solving problems in that profession. You can never know all there is to know about it so you will learn more and more and your imagination will come by itself. For instance, you are given an assignment to build this building, so you take part of the style from this person only change it just a tad using another person's idea, then over there is one thing you would like to use and a long time ago you saw someone do this, etc. let's say that you used the "ideas" from 20 of the people that you have seen/known in the past. then people would say...my what a great imagination you have...because it was you who put all those people's ideas together. so would you need imagination? you tell me.

Yes you can be a successful architect without ever fully utilizing your creative talents or imagination, though not a great one and especially not a happy or fulfilled one.

Though why won't you, use you talents of creativity as each one of us is born with this gift, which is so connected with our purpose, out here on this planet.

So why let it rust away when we can always use those very tools to carve out your life’s path, and chisel away a masterpiece of your destiny.

Imagine, what you’d do if you had no limitations, what so ever.

And then do just that.

Imagine you biggest dream, and then begin to live it. One step, one day at a time.

We might need to rediscover our innate talents of creativity sometimes, as we might have lost touch with it while growing up, that’s all.

imagine first that you werent an architect, just someone walking through the city streets... then imagine a building to your right without a builder ... then imagine the ground without a foundation ... and imagine how plain the lot you stand on would look without you.

to be creative (an architect) you must first have a vision and without imagination you are blind.

There are very few originality oriented architects.... originality is what calls for imagination. Majority of the working architects are clever copycats.
