She was in a sanitorium, a long-term care facility, after contracting Tuberculosis, a contagious lung disease for which we now have better treatments. It was and still is important to keep those suffering from the disease isolated from others to prevent the spread of TB.

The real reason Mama Walton wound up in the ol' sanitorium was that Michael Learned, the actress who portrayed her, wanted to leave the series.

If you had as many kids as she did you would be in a sanatorium too. And every week there was another crisis. The poor woman probably needed a break.
