Good question. Depends on where you live. For example, if you live out in the suburbs in a cold zone, and you're about 15 or more minutes from the nearest gas station... or the nearest grocery store. Then you should be prepared, like having snow tires, enough gas in the car, and enough food and water in the fridge, and having enough heating oil, or firewood, for example. If your house is in the flood plain, or in the path of hurricanes or tornadoes, you should be more prepared than others.
There are other emergencies such as black-outs and terrorist attacks and flu epidemics.. There are just too many things that can go wrong. But not everything will happen.
So, it's good to be prepared for things that are most likely going to happen. I am preparing for a financial disaster up ahead when social security and medicaid fails and stock markets crash - because of the baby boomers retiring in the millions.

Growing up on the ocean in the middle of nowhere, I have a habit of keeping tons of emergency crap in the house, in the car, and at the office. HOWEVER, I now live in the DC area. We had a somewhat heavy rain for a couple of hours one evening a few months ago. No significant flooding or any other emergency. Just rain. Everything came to a grinding halt all over the city and for miles out into Virginia and Maryland. It took me almost 5 hours just to drive 10 miles home from Georgetown. The cops blocked off all of the interstates and most of the main roads "just in case". It was totally insane.
During 9/11 I was stranded in Texas for a week, but when I got home the cops had my whole neighborhood blocked off for over a month (I live up the street from the Pentagon). If there is ever some sort of semi-serious emergency, the Nation's Capital is seriously f*cked!

I wonder just what kind of preparation I could make for another 9-11? I don't travel in the desert, but if I did I guess I would make sure my car was in excellent shape, that I had extra clothes, and lots of water.
For cold? We have a lot of candles in the house, but no wood furnace or fireplace, so we really are not well prepared. We have a neighbour with a wood furnace though and get along well with him.
Katrina? no. Is there any way to prepare for something like that?

I am certainly more prepared that the people of New Orleans were! And why are they re building in the very same spot, below sea level when it is inevitable with global warming that it will happen again and that once again they will not be prepared? At tax payers expense to boot. Whose bailing out the state of Michigan because the auto industry is tanking out? No one. No one cares. You help one economically depressed group for one reason why can't you give aid to another?

Yes, I am prepared. I do not live in a big city that can be a target of attack. I do not live in coastal area - a target for storms..
I do not drive far in the country in winter time...What I am lacking is a hand gun at my house, but it's in my plans...

No Because the chances of 9/11 and Katrina happening again are zilch..... other things will happen but when they do, they will not be compared to these atrocities.
And i have a hot water bottle in case anything should happen!!!
