Most radio stations make their money by selling advertising. How much an ad sells for is negotiated between the station and the advertiser. It is based mainly on how many ads the advertiser wants to buy and how many people are expected to here the ads when they air.

Radio stations using frequencies between 87 and 92 MHz in the U.S. are reserved for educational, community and noncommercial use. They are considered non commercial stations and cannot sell advertising. Just like the PBS stations on TV. They can accept donations, and underwriting support.

Also some Religious themed radio stations try to stay away from selling ads and rely on donations. Non-profit corporations who own radio stations also tend not to sell advertising.

The odds are that the one asking for donations is Public Radio. This means they don't have advertisers or commercials. Most radio gets paid through advertisers/ If they are asking for donations they probably don't have advertising. The funding for Public Radio was decreased by the current presidential administration (they used to get a significant amount of money from Government grants), so their reliance on public donations has increased.

They get paid by selling advertising or by signing on to a network that sells advertising. If they are asking for donations, it's possible they don't sell ads, or they can't sell enough to pay the bills.

The get paid first and foremost by putting on programming that makes people want to listen.

The more people who listen, the more they can charge for their advertising.
