I would like to know if there is anything that I can do to ensure that I will receive unemployment benefits. This is a pretty shady company so I would like to cover all ends. Also, if anybody has a format for a lay off letter of some sort that would help also.

Yes, that notice of termination due to company (bancruptcy, closing etc) is the most important document you can ask for. Is the company or corporation registered? Get a copy of theat if you can so you can accurately described what kind of company you used to work for. Get a copy of your detailed job description there, make your own letters of referral if you must, describe your job requirements, salaries, benefits, and have their personnel manager sign it . Make duplicates or triplicates for application purposes. When you mail out resumes, send only copies. Keep the originals at home.

Go to your Blue Pages in the phone book to get local government numbers for assistance. Look for departments with the word "employment" or "labor" in them. It should only take a few calls to find the unemployment office, which can answer your question precisely.
Also, get a letter of recommendation for the good wok you did for your next employer; it may be hard to find these people in a few weeks for referrals.
And look up "COBRA" if you need to extend you medical plan; you should be able to extend your coverage for six months.

Yes, definitely ask for a letter of recommendation as well as an extension on your health insurance. It can't hurt to ask for a little severance pay either. All they can say is no.
