How many of you do it? I hate them but am suffering sleep deprivation as a result of my neighbours. Can you hear the alarm clock? Terrified of sleeping in. Also, which kind are the best, where do you get them and how much do they cost?

As someone who works with sound on a daily basis, I've found sleeping with ear plugs an absolute necessity - the slightest thing wakes me up, and it can get *really* annoying. Ear plugs are pretty uncomfortable, and if you wear them more than once they get pretty icky, but I get a much better night's sleep wearing them than not.

I agree with the person above - wax ones are actually better at cutting out noise, but they're even more uncomfortable. Go for foam and see what you think.

You can get ones that are designed to fit your ear exactly - I think they pour some kind of molten plastic in your ear - but I've never dared venture down that road, plus it costs around £100. Whereas you can pick up a packet of three foam plugs from Boots from around £2.

Edit : I've never slept through my alarm yet, and that's with the ear plugs in. I do have it set quite loud though.

Hope this helps.

I used wax earplus for ages because my husband's snoring was supersonic. He has started using a CPAP and both our lives have changed so I don't use the ear plugs anymore. But I found the wax plugs to be best. They are not too expensive, as I recall about $3.50 for 12 plugs, and do allow some sound through so your alarm clock should wake you up. Good luck. I know what its like to not get any sleep and I hope you can resolve your problem soon.

The wax ones are good but the foam ones are best. Be aware that you can push wax further into the ears using earplugs. I did this recently during a hospital visit and was deaf in my left ear for awhile. You can get them from the chemist and they cost about £1 for two pairs. You can re-use them-I did. The foam ones can be washed. If I had noisy neighbours I would definitely use them. Its hell when you can't sleep. There is a danger of sleeping through an alarm clock but move it nearewr to you and use your mobile phone alarm as a back up. A baby ben alarm is very loud and you shouldn't sleep through that. I hope your neighbours quieten down.

Ear plugs are a life saver for many people who have problems falling asleep due to noises such as snoring spouses. The foam plugs are most effective. You roll them to insert then they expand to enclose the canal from noise.

If you fear waking up late, you can try a few things. One is turning the alarm clock to full volume, but then you risk waking others. I suggest you purchase a digital timer and plug a lamp into it. The light will wake you up at the time you set. You can also use the timer with objects that move. Plug in the object and the movement will wake you. Keep in on your bed for better effectiveness.

This may sound bad but "hear me out". I use earplugs on weeknights (when I have to work the next day). I have a 2 year old and a 9 month old. The 9 month old is just starting to sleep most of the night but some nights are better than others. My wife and I have an arrangement. She doesn't work during the week, just weekends. So if I have to work the next day, she gets up if the baby cries. When she has to work the next day it's my turn. So I use them Sunday thru thursday nights. I can't remember the brand but they are squishy foam and orange in color and they come in a clear plastic case and I think there are 6 or 8 in the package. They work great and the alarm clock is now on the night stand next to my head and I have woken to the alarm clock every time so far (knock on wood).

They do work. If you have a clock/radio. pick out a screechy rock and roll statio, and turn it up full volume so you won't sleep through the music. I don't hear my neighbors, cats fighting outside, or much of anything else. Additionally, they also block out a partner's snoring enough to be able to fall asleep and stay that way. Any drug store has them. They're usually around the eyecare stuff.

I prefer to get the ones that will cover 29-33 decibels of noise. However, any will work pretty well if you have neighbor issues. They're very inexpensive. In most cases, far less than $5.

Good luck.

I wear them at work and when I am sleeping. I haven't had a problem yet. I use the yellow foam ones. My alarm clock is one of the loudest I've ever come across. Will wake me in a dead sleep with no problem. Only problem is when I take my ear plugs out in the middle of the night for no reason and the alarm goes off in the morning.

I can't sleep without them! I've been using them now for a year as a result of a new neighbor who uses his garage as a damn mechanic shop which is directly below my bedroom window early mornings etc...

They cost less than four bucks for six or more but there are different types. Some are uncomfortable for me especially the more firmer ones but its an individual thing so experiment!

I can still hear my alarm clock and the phone in the mourning due to the fact that it's next to my bed it just lowers the audience down to 32h its just softer and I sleep so much sounder, I love em!

I do sometimes, I find I can still hear my alarm clock because it's such an annoying noise. You can get vibrating alarm clocks that have a thing that goes under your pillow, my deaf housemate has one that also flashes brightly
I think disposable plugs are best because they shape to your ear within a few seconds. They're very cheap and sometimes given away as freebies.

I can use snoring ear plugs for sleeping. Rubber and foam ear plugs are best for sleeping.
$20 to $50 is best price for ear plugs.
