I don't know if it is really necessary, I understand that they were surpressed for a long time and suffered many tortures. I just wish they would really think about it. At certain points in history mass numbers of many different races have been wronged, beaten, raped and suffered many tortures.
The Jews, Gypsies, handicapped, Blacks and many others were tortured in the Holocost. Women were burned at the stake for several centuries for being a "witch" but thats forgotten about too. Look what Saddam did to the Shites, but we don't have a Shite month? Many others through out history have been killed and tortured for a long time due to others. Look at what we did to the Indians, but instead of giving them a month they got casinos? I dont get it.
I understand history is extremely important and I love to read about history but to celebrate on races history over another is wrong and just another way to segregate and thats what were trying still to abolish today. Doesnt work when you just keep segregating.

I am not racist whatsoever-I live in a very diverse area. But when Black History Month or Martin Luther King Jr. Day rolls around, the few "crackers" that live in our neighborhood are treated quite badly. It's been on the news. I'm sure it would be 'supremacist' if we tried for "White History Month" or "Jewish History Day" where we were allowed to rehash any injustices that any African-American ever did to any white person anywhere, and tell them it's because we are "oppressed". We know some of "us" did wrong in the past. And I'm glad that blacks can now be free and successful. But grinding in the bad things that some selfish, hateful whites did long ago is similar to saying that every young black male will rob a Quik-E-Mart, and that isn't right either.

Yes, it is necessary. The racists who have posted replies saying that it is not necessary is the exact reason why we need to have a Black History Month.

No a complete waste of my time at school, every race was badly treated over the past, so why should we throw away precious time and tax dollars on just this one race? if there is a black history month, there should be an Asian, Native American, Jew, European, Middle-Eastern, etc.. Black History Month is just something the idiotic politicians put up so Blacks can get over the fact that they've been enslaved for a while...
sorry if i sounded racist, but it's the truth, there should not be a month dedicated to a race like that, if one is, then all other races deserve the same

I think Morgan Freeman really had a good point on this subject.
NEW YORK - Morgan Freeman says the concept of a month dedicated to black history is "ridiculous."
"You're going to relegate my history to a month?" the 68-year-old actor says in an interview on CBS' "60 Minutes" to air Sunday (7 p.m. EST). "I don't want a black history month. Black history is American history."
Black History Month has roots in historian Carter G. Woodson's ***** History Week, which he designated in 1926 as the second week in February to mark the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
Woodson said he hoped the week could one day be eliminated — when black history would become fundamental to American history.
Freeman notes there is no "white history month," and says the only way to get rid of racism is to "stop talking about it."
The actor says he believes the labels "black" and "white" are an obstacle to beating racism.
"I am going to stop calling you a white man and I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a black man," Freeman says.

Yes, because we live in a White supremacist country, and without Black History Month the many contributions that African Americans have made to this nation would remain unknown.

Its very neccessary. Seeing as how the entire race was shackled, beaten, raped, and forced to live as anything BUT human for hundreds of years....you're damn right there should be a Black History month. So people like you wont forget whose backs this country was built on and whose blood was shed for it to prosper.
There should also be a Native American History month. A Jewish History Month. And im sure, many other months in celebration of various cultures who have suffered tremendously because of greed & manipulation.

It is a bit seperating, but it's necessary for the self esteem levels of a race that was for a long period of time, and still in some places, considered directly or indirectly to be inferior.

i believe the reason of having a black historical past month is to renowned the contributions that blacks have made to u.s.. additionally blacks are no longer the only ones to have a month committed to them. March is ladies folk's historical past month, might is Asian/ Pacific American historical past month, and September is Hispanic historical past month. I thoroughly consider your component that black historical past is likewise area of yankee historical past. yet there became a time whilst it became no longer taught, contributions made by ability of blacks or the different non-whites became no longer given lots interest in faculties. of direction this has replaced now.
