My mom's computer is fairly new, and her subscription to Word is expiring in a few days. Since when did Word cease to come free with the computer?? When her Word program expires, will she still have access to her Word files? Will they erase???

She will have access and they won't erase.

There's no legal way to get it free and you are right to fear sites that tell you differently.

You might try OpenOffice. It is now and will forever by free. It is developed by a community of developers (sort of like Yahoo Answers are answered not by Yahoo but by this community). It will read Word documents and save documents in Word format. The only difficult thing your mom may experience is that she will have to specify that the documents be saved in Word format instead of OpenOffice format if she is going to send them to someone else.

As far as I know, Word has never been a free program. She might have gotten a free trial version which expires after a month or so, but that's common with a lot of software that comes preinstalled on a new machine. In fact, you should check any anti-virus and firewall programs that came pre-installed to make sure they don't expire soon as well. I've seen a lot of friends' machines where they were using a pre-installed virus scanner for years, but didn't realize that they weren't getting the latest virus signatures because the trial version had expired.

Her existing Word files will not erase. I don't know what will happen when the subscription expires, but if she doesn't want to buy an official version of Word, you can download a free application called OpenOffice.org (that's the actual name of the application, as well as the name of the web site). OpenOffice.org is an office suite similar to Microsoft office, and it contains a word processor called Writer that can read and write Word files.

Don't worry that the files will erase. Also 'MS-Word' doesn't come free. You can try "Open Office`s-Writer" which is a free ware from 'SUN-Miocrosystems'.You can download 'Open Office' at
http://download.openoffice.org/
It can very obviously open '.doc' files of 'MS-Word'.

Alternatively you can also try ABI-Word which is also a freeware.
download it at
http://www.abisource.com/download/
