I am going on vacation to Thailand soon and do not use credit cards. I do not want to take a lot of cash or traveler checks, but do want ready access to money when I need it. Most of my time will be spent in Bangkok or Udorn. I assume my Visa debit card for one of my accounts will suffice nicely. Are there any other options which do not include a hefty fee of any kind?

Definitely use some type of visa/mastercard etc. (debit cards included.) This way you will be able to take advantage of the best possible exchange rates. The exchange rate a single person could get would not even come close to what the bank will get for you if you use a card...the bank just does such a great volume of exchanges that they have a great deal of leverage in the exchange.

Contact one of the big international banks in your area and ask them if they have a branch in Bangkok or an affiliated bank that they do business with. Establish an account and put your money into it. The debit card is probably the best bet. It's relatively secure and funds are transferred at the bank's preferred rate. American Express has offices all over the world, they would be another option.

Most major malls in Bangkok have On Site Currency Exchange service. The rates are competitve with the ones at the airport.
If you use a debit card keep in mind, when you use an atm machine, you will be paying a fee both ways- from the Thai bank and your own. The Thai banks typically charge $2.50 for foreign atm fee.
