The grey pound is a term used by the media for the over 50's. They also use the term the grey vote for the same people during election times.

The term 'grey pound' -- meaning the purchasing power of older people -- first appeared in the press on July 9, 1997 in the Daily Record ("The power of the 'grey pound' was highlighted in a survey ... Over-50s make up 37 per cent of the public ...")

It was a spin-off from 'pink pound', what had been in the press as early as late 1993.

They have grey hair. Well as a stereotype they do.
Just like gay people have the pink pound because gay people like pink.
It's just a load of twaddle in the end.

Well they were already using pink pound for gays, so i suppose it followed on from there!
