There's truth & BS in most of the previous answers, perhaps in all the YA we see.

I have been homeless, altho only for a couple of months. I didn't live on the streets, I still had my vehicle.

I won't get into details here, tho I discuss them freely when appropriate. Most of the homeless are in their present situation because of choices they've made.....I was no different.

While not all of "them" use drugs & alcohol, many do.And choices involving drugs & alcohol are among the causes that put them on the streets.

There are many programs & shelters available. Homeless I have spoken to sy, "I 'm not going to some shelter, they all talk about religion" Fair enough...they made a choice. Some would say shelters shouldn't push religion. Actually most shelters don't "push" religion....no one is asking anyone to join a church.

They do push faith, & it is spiritual faith, they're trying to help rebuild inner strength.

If the government GAVE every homeless person in this country a home, a job & some cash to get started on a new life; I would be certain a very high percentage(maybe 90%) of them would be back on the streets within 3-5 years.

That's not negativity, I'm an optomist at heart, the facts don't lie! And paying for it all is an issue, (& hold off on the,$$ spent on war would pay for it momentarily) and what are we going to do for those millions right on the edge financially? They haven't given up, so they deserve some help....maybe moreso.

My having no "home" but my vehicle was based in large part to bad choices I also had made involving alcohol, tho there were other factors too. While you could argue I wasn't really homeless since I had a vehicle to provide shelter, I can assure you it was as close as I hope to ever be!!

I was living in a county that is in the top 5 nationally for median income and there were plenty of public & private programs I could have used for some assistance. I didn't choose that rouye for two reasons.

One of them was just stubborn pride. The other reason was I knew if I relied too much on "free" help I might not get out of the "system"

I thank God, & a few select friends who gave me encouragement (& a kick in the btt ) to restore my life. There were a few "conditions" for the assistance they offered, & tho none of them were unreasonable (like not drinking), I could have said no thanks & stayed in my car (until it was gone)

The argument that some of the homeless have no friends or family is weak. That would be very rare to have NO relatives or friends. All of them may have withdrawn support because of past experience & issues of their own.

Today, two years later I have a decent job, tho not as good as when I owned a successful business. And I have food & shelter, & most important, faith that my life will continue improving if I make good choices.

Having the govt give me all I needed would have been easier, but it would have been a temporary fix.

Late edit- Hula bate , I often rant, rarely about nothing, but your opinion is well written & considered. Capitalism has done well by me overall, & dismiss the notion that because some corporations have been corrupt all of them are, any more than if one elected official lies they all do. Actually I prefer Sam Kennison's solution!!

Because this is a free country.

Most homeless are that way by choice, or as a result of choices.

There are tons and tons of organizations that will help them get back on their feet...its the homeless that don't want to!

A few maybe had some bad luck befall them, they take advantage of those organizations and do, in fact, get back on their feet.

Not the bums you see sleeping on the street corner though, they are exactly where they want to be. I used to see them sleeping just outside the shelter, because the shelter required them to be sober to come inside!! They'd rather be cold and drunk (or high, stoned, wasted) than sober and warm.

Santa bud you rant on MUCH about nothing & obviously learned little from 2 months sleeping in your vehicle! Capitalism IS a one sided where only the few benifit & the rest get explioted following promises of the American dream that never will materialize! Infact this country has evolved into extreme Corporate Fascism with little hope for the independant thinker to succeed without their sponcership! Representative Government "congress" is giving seed money, earmarks, Black book spending & other corporate handouts Corporate Welfare far exceeding any welfare going directly to the economically disadvantged. Maybe you need to spend some more time sleeping in your vehicle to get a clue about our corrupt capitalistic structure!!! zmanryan2 here ya go http://www.usbig.net/ write congress.org demanding this to replace welfare!

There is very good reason. The money that could be spent on job training, housing, and counseling to help homeless people is desperately neededelsewhere--for examplle, $200 million for a "bridge to nowhere" so Sen. Stevens (R-Alaska) can pay off his backers, or the billions in subsidies for the oil companies (like Exxon--whithout those subsidies, they'd have to struggle to survive on a mere $10 billion a quarter in profit), or. . .

So you see, with so many in such desperate need, the homeless will just have to wait their turn.

The government needs the money that would house and feed the poor to fight their war. They need the money to maintain the war machine. They need the money of the charity coffers to research more efficient means of arming the war machine to fight the wars they have engaged in. For crying out loud don't you understand that it takes literally trillions of dollars to keep and maintain this protection you need? Doesn't any body listen to the rhetoric of the elected and non elected officials? They need money for their just or unjust causes. Where else are they going to get it? It sure isn't from the people that can stand up for themselves. So who better than the poor and the ignorant?
Sheesh!!! Some people can be so naive.

Most don't want to be helped
Their out drinking and drugging
If not their yelling at people on the street
There are a million org to help homeless
Homeless that want to be helped that is
let nature take its course
It is winter and the ranks of the homeless will thin out
It isn't the Gov job to care for anyone let alone those that don't even want to care for theirselves

Many of them don't want to get on their feet. They want someone to take care of them. They believe they have a right to what someone else earns, so they wait for someone to do everything for them. They are lazy. Anyone who really wants to get on their feet will find a way. Anyone who doesn't want to get on their feet will find an excuse why they can't.

WHy is that people exect to gov. to do everything for them...and they are organizations to help. More and more people are saying to much gov.....and then they expect the gov. to give hand outs all the time.....Most of those people are there because of the poor choices they made....and yes I do know that some have just had a bad sting of luck.....but most are there because of their own choices in life......

The government doesn't have money. People do - at least relative to people in other countries. That is true precisely because our government takes less of our money and allows us a greater degree of economic freedom than other governments allow their citizens. It is not a function of government to force some people to subsidize others.
