Lace up boots will fit the contours of your calves better by allowing you to adjust the tension of the materials against your skin. Also, if you wear socks with them one day when it is cold and end up stretching it out, you'll be able to tighten the lacing when you don't wear the extra bulk so they still fit correctly.
Lacing also gives you added benefits and options: You're not stuck with the same old laces...or zipper. You can dress them up or dress them down. You can add charms, or even tuck the laces in to hide them. Have fun trying to hide a zipper.

Good question. There are a couple of aspects to look at though. Personally, lace boots tend to have more of a Victorian style, so it depends on your style preference. I like the zip ones better because they are more versatile with all my different outfits.
Besides style and versitility, it depends on your calf width. sometimes zip ones might run a little tight in the calf, & with lace-ups, you can tie them for comfort.
One more thing; taking them off. Zip-up ones are nice to take off because they slide off more easily than the ones you have to untie. If you're in a hurry and need to change, or if you're in a dressing room, zip-ups will be easier to deal with.
There are good and bad points to both, but zip-ups seem to win! Hope this helps!
p.s. Oh, and I saw a comment about how it's hard to hide a zipper; the pair I have is actually HIDDEN on the inside calf, a perfect width for my calves and are very comfy. If you are going to be wearing them often, go with zip up - having to lace them up and making sure the laces are evenly tight every time will eventually make you dread wearing them. Laced ones are sexier, and better if they are only rare or occasional boots (try to find ones with a hidden zipper to speed things up, though you still have to adjust the laces each time due to water weight retention fluctuations in your legs). Also, if you have thick calves, go with the zip ups, the laced ones will make your legs look heavier because you can see the gradual spread of the laces from the ankle up as you calf gets wider, and you don't want to draw attention to that.

I would have to say it depends on the look you are trying to go for. . .If you have a hard time finding boots that fit to your leg then go with lace up... I havea pair that lace up in the front, but the zip on the inside of the leg( you cant see ) it gives that tight fit but still room for growth!

Depends if you are looking for ease of use or overall looks - lace up take time to put on but are far sexier than zipper which does allow you to slide in and out of them relatively quickly.
In the end it all depends on what you will be doing before, during and after the boots are on ;-)

zip up is always better, imagine the night you look damn hot and are having an awesome time, you pull a stunning bloke and take them home and at the crucial time you have to spend ages undoing ya laces on ya boots by then the moments gone. or ya dancing away and looking damn hot when all of a suddenly ya lace unties and ya spend ages doing it back up its one way to miss ya fave song and you may look a wally sitting there in a pub or club doing them back up and there is always one little idiot that will untie them on purpose!!!! zips all the way xx

They are both fantastic. I like the sleek look of the zip ups. But the lace up ones are fantastic as well. Tough choice...make sure you have lots of both.

Knee boots in leather are really hot right now, but as simple as possible. Think catsuit. So I would say a hidden zip :D

It truly depends on the outfit some lace ups are sexy and some zip ups are sexy just make sure they have a stiletto heal and your good.
