Is it safe to say, for example, consume black tea sweetened with aspartame while pregnant? If so, is it more harmful at certain parts of the pregnancy?

I had gestational diabetes with one of my pregnancies. I had to go to classes and meet with a dietitian during my pregnancy. The recommendation at the classes and confirmed with my OB and the dietitian is that artificial sweeteners are safe during pregnancy. When I researched it further, I couldn't find any studies that artificial sweeteners caused any problems for babies - no birth defects or other harmful effects.

As far as caffeine, my OB lets me have caffeine when I get headaches. If you drink 5 or cups of coffee a day, it is linked to miscarriage. I think an occasional cup of tea is fine. Here's a link from March of Dimes.

Sucralose (Splenda) is safe. Aspartame (Equal) is safe. Saccharine (Sweet & Low) IS NOT.

"Splenda is a trade name given to a generic, low calorie sweetener called sucralose. According to the Food and Drug Administration and the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives, sucralose is safe for everyone to consume, including pregnant women."

According to the FDA and an MIT study - Aspartame is SAFE for people to use (including pregnant women) unless you have phenylketonuria - in which case you cannot metabolize the substance phenylalnine.

"Aspartame is made up of two amino acids: aspartic acid and phenylalanine. Amino acids make up proteins. Don't be confused, though -- aspartame is not a protein. The chemical configuration of aspartame is different from that of a protein. When aspartame is digested, it is broken down into aspartic acid, phenyalanine and methanol, substances that can actually be found in "natural" foods. For example, the same substances can be found in milk, fruits and vegetables. Actually, many of these "natural" foods have higher amounts of aspartic acid, phenylalanine and methanol because aspartame is used in such small quantities. Some of the breakdown products may cross the placenta, but studies show that the amount is insignificant, and therefore, determined to be safe."

"Saccharine can cross the placenta barrier into fetal blood, and a fetus is much slower to clear the saccharine from its blood than the mom. So if you are consuming large amounts of saccharin, it may accumulate in the baby's bladder and potentially increase its risk for bladder problems or possibly even bladder cancer."

A lot of people dont even know the danger of this aspartame which is in a lot of food products but i dont even understand why it is been put in food if it is harmful i think some one should look seriously into this natural caffeine from like coffee and tea should not be bad as this product.

neither aspartame nor caffeine are good while pregnant (actually, they are never good), but a little of each should not have any damaging effects. I've talked to a number of doctors, and they said they same thing.

They are both okay, in moderation. Personally, I would stay away from the aspartame and just use Splenda, or better yet, regular sugar.

i would avoid anything with caffeine...tea, soda, coffee, etc. b/c that i know is not good for baby regardless of how far along you are. however, i'm not sure about aspartame, my doctor never mentioned it during either of my pregnancies. but if you are really concerned, ask your doc about it during your next visit.

Aspartame is harmful for EVERYBODY, pregnant or not. They're just now discovering that it causes a myriad of horrible conditions. Avoid it

Caffeine is bad because it increases the risk for miscarriage, so it should also be avoided

Diabetes is usually treated through a combination of diet (low sugar), exercise and medications/insulin. Read here https://tr.im/rBUTf
Milder cases can be controlled with just diet an/or exercise while more severe cases require meds or insulin as well.

Yes and yes... you may consume a very small amount of caffiene, but no caffiene is way better for you and the baby.
