This depends on the kind of league in which you play. The most common form of scoring is rotisserie, or roto. In roto, you take the combined batting average of all of your starters (divide the total number of hits by your team by the total at-bats) to get a composite batting average for your team. Your composite average is then ranked against the composite averages of all of the other teams in your league. Then, the average is assigned a numerical value (a high number meaning that you have a better batting average than your competitors, a low number meaning that you have Adam Dunn and Richie Sexson as your batting champs), based on the number of teams in the league. For example, if there are 12 teams in your league, and you have the best batting team in your league, you'd earn 12 points in the batting average category (if you're second best you'd earn 11; third best, 10; or worst, just 1). The batting average in a roto league accumulates over the course of the season, so it may be hard to gain ground if you start off with a bad average over a high number of at bats.

In a head-to-head league, your team average competes against the average of only one other team for the span of only one week. At the end of the week, the team with the higher average is credited with one "victory" for that week, the team with the lower average a "loss," and if the average is the same, the players get a tie. In a sense, the victory is like a point for your team.

Basically, the guys who will have the most impact on batting averages for your team are the guys who have lots of hits. This may seem obvious, but you have to take into account the fact that every player who has a high batting average won't necessarily carry your team in the average category. If a guy like Ichiro Suzuki gets 200 hits in 600 at-bats, he will have a greater impact on average than, say, a Miguel Cabrera who only gets 170 hits in 510 at-bats, even though they would have the same average.

Depending on your league rules it will vary. If you are in a 5 x 5 league; points are distributed by standings. For example, if your league has 12 teams then you get 12 points for being the top team for the batting average category, 11 points for the second best and so on. This goes for the other 4 offensive categories, Steals, HR, RBIs, and Runs. So you can get a maximum of 60 points for the 5 offensive categories. Then you will get points for the 5 pitching categories (Ks, WHIP, ERA, Wins, and Saves), hence the name 5 x 5 league.
