I know this is a provocative question, but, surely, we can discuss this issue like ladies and gentlemen, can't we? This might be your opportunity to change a Democrat's mind, assuming you think he/she has one. If I had a closed mind, why would I want to discuss it?

Obviously, the top 10% most affluent Americans support Republicans. The Republicans are their means to rob the treasury.

Then there is some number of people that have a lottery mentality. They think if they support the Republicans, they will become one of the top !0%. This is the 11th man mentality.
They actually think they are one of the team.

Many others are prodded to the Republicans by the churches of the Religious Right.

Lastly there is the mass of mouth-breathing, non-thinking, Rush Limbaugh parroting knot heads that mistake fallacious logic for critical thinking skills.

Add it up, that's 51% of the voting population as evidenced in 2004.

I agree with alot of Republican ideas. Economics, domestic policies, global relations, and a smaller government. But these ideas, are only that, theories that never see the light of day.

The party has taken a turn for the worse in attempts to build their political base.

They've alligned themselves with religious fanaticals and the extreme right-wing spokepersons that represent them make the entire party look like some kind of Cult full of bigots. Who honestly cares about "Gay Marriage"?

An attempt needs to be made to dis-associate the party from these 'leaders' and focus more on the things that matter most in this country.

A republican leader than doesn't just mindlessly flow along hard core conservative 'values' would be a little more than welcome.

I'm deeply religious. Republicans tend to support laws that allow all religions to be expressed, whereas Democrats tend to support laws that censor all religion "because it might offend somebody".

I also support the war on terror and I personally believe they take it more seriously than the Democrats do.

Republicans have a long history of treating the military well.

Republicans typically do not support Abortion. Neither do I.

I fell (in my humble opinion) that Republicans have a better grasp of what Patriotism is. "Patriotism" is not abusing the rights we're given like some left-wingers believe, it's supporting the country when times are tough and believing in the military when times no one else will.

I'm more of an Independent than a Republican, but I agree with them more often than not. I see a lot of reasons to be a Republican. Anybody who makes the "what excuses are there to be this or that" type of threads tend to have a closed mind.

A babies heart beats after 24 days in the womb and most Democrats support killing that baby. 1.3 million babies were killed in 2000. Compare that with the fact that 4 million babies were born in 2000 and that means that almost 25% of pregancies ended in an abortion. So the odds of being killed are greater if you are a baby in your mother's womb than they are if you are a soldier in Iraq.
Abortion is reason enough for me to never vote for a Democrat.

Reason can be explained in one word. Truth. 2 words. No Abortions. 3 words. Kill the terrorist. And, at this point in life, I can't think of ANY reasons to be a Democrat. Democrat party is no longer the party it used to be. Just ask Senator Lieberman (D)

Republicans used to be the party of good rational decisions and good fiscal responsibility and small government.
Now they are a party of I don't know what. But most make no sense at all and spend money like there is no tomorrow.

I think "lifesajoy" just gave you some excellent reasons. However to provide you with more knowledge on this subject... in which I'm not really sure you actually desire real knowledge... consider that most Republicans believe in "capitalism". It's not a perfect system... but, ain't it funny how we (the United States) just happens to be the only superpower in the world. Think long and hard about this... but don't hurt yourself.
