Any method with a live instructor-there's no substitute for the give-and-take, and a good teacher will give you the right feedback and stop any bad habits before they start. (That's why they don't have computers teach school)
You don't have to go to the local music superstore- find someone at school or the neighborhood who plays reasonably well, and make some sort of arrangement - it'll be less formal, cheaper, and your teacher will probably be able to remember your name without looking at the clipboard. If money's an issue, offer to trade chores like lawnmowing -I teach guitar on the side, and that's what one of my students does during the spring, summer and fall.
