My teacher keeps talking about Lexington and Concord, the British and Paul Revere, but she hasn't said why the British attacked. So, now I'm curious. Why did they?

It is not clear that the British did attack first. No one knows who fired the first shot or if it was even directed at anyone.

The British were looking for two brass 10lb. cannons They eventually got one but the other was hidden away.

The British wanted to seize ammunition and powder that the dissenting colonists were suspected of hiding, so they attempted to sneak a lightning raid (and made quite a public spectacle of it) to the northwest of Boston. The colonists found out using the Sons of Liberty's spy network, and assembled a formation on Lexington Green. The British had to go through them, and thus a battle ensued (even though its unclear who fired the first shot).

They heard that the colonists had stored guns and ammunition at Concord and possibly at Lexington. Thus they marched there to find the stored up contraband. On the way they encountered the Americans and battles occurred.

The British went looking for hidden arms and ammunition. They didn't plan on fighting at all. However, they met some militia and things just got out of hand. Who fired first is still debatable to this day.

Because they believed there were arms stored at those locations, including a cannon that had been stolen.
