I live here too and if you think all Japanese are polite and smart, you are in for a big suprise. Maybe you won't notice if you just visit but once you start living and working here you will see they are the same as people every where. Some are nice and some are not. My favorite thing thats bad that young people(and older people too) do is when thier sitting in the priority seats on the train (For old, disabled, or pregnant women) they could be reading but the second an old lady gets on they immediatly act like thier sleeping so they don't have to give up thier seat.

Just like every coountries there are the good and the bad. Just hope you don't run into the mafia over there. They are not so nice.

It is a stereotype to call all Japanese people smart and successful. They have failures too. Don't join the ignorant Americans while you are over there.

No people anywhere are "all wonderful". Their culture promotes politeness and respect. As for the success, it may stem from speaking better English than you do.

They are nice. At least that's the impression I get.

Don't they spend like 10 hours a day in school? That would explain the smart part.

it is just the way there society and culture is. if you were always always treated nicely, you would naturally be nice.
if you were taught to always wash your hands before eating etc.
your hygiene would be extremely well
there success is all because of these little things
