One of the things that make humans humans is the ability to freely generalize different things (the ability to generalize is used by some animals to recognize each other). Stereotypes are a form of generalization, and while useful occasionaly are often overused and inaccurate.

It is easier to accept a stereotype than to get to know the person and find out about them.
