Why do we call very attractive women - bombshells?

This came about during World War II when Air Force pilots would paint women on the side of their B-52 bombers. They would use the women for inspiration and have faith that their "bombshells" would keep them safe. The phrase caught on and beautiful women have been known as Bombshells ever since.

The use referring to a strikingly beautiful woman is a specialized example of this. This subsense was popularized, if not coined, in the 1933 movie Bombshell (also called The Blonde Bombshell), starring Jean Harlow. For some years the word was used referring specifically to Ms Harlow, but now it can refer to any attractive woman. The collocation blonde bombshell is often found as a set phrase, though."
