I lived in Florence and Milan for 3,5 years. I studied in Florence for 1 year then worked in Milan with Italians as a designer.
So far I know is that (base from my experiences there) Italians traditionally are very dramatic people, compassionate. But they sometimes could be very very rude. Milanese people in general are to-die-for fashion. Italians also emotionally explosive but they very predictable if you really know how to handle and deal with them well. Italian men generally -I repeat generally- are very loyal to their mamas. They are so-called mama's boys, really spoiled by their mothers. Their mamas are their number one priority in their life. Normal because 'mama' is a very strong figure in Italy. Matriarch.....
But they are also on the other hand nice warm people. It's so easy to make friendship with Italians because they are compassionate. They are actually curious with foreigners in their country but they just so afraid to express their curiosity. So it would be nice if you 'open' yourself first to them, then after... you will see how wonderful they are as your friends; they would invite you to have dinner in their house. Ask you to go with them whenever they go dining out or have fun out there... etc etc
:) Even they could really really help you for legal things... use their 'insiders' to help your stay in Italy to make you feel home there with them.
