An important distinction is Mbps - mega BITS per second - bit being a single binary digit, and MBps - mega BYTES per second - a byte being 8 binary digits. 1 MBps = 8 Mbps. Unfortunatelly, the case of the b (capital or lower case) makes a big difference.

The wire uses the 100 Mbps metric, but the computer uses the MBps metric so when your computer is getting a download speed of 10 MBps, that equals 83,886,080 bps or ~ 84 Mbps - pretty close to the same thing when it comes to actually comparing the raw transfer rate using the same metric.

For most modern LAN networks - small office or home where everything is relatively close together without alot of routing equipment and switches, its the maximum speed at which a wire can carry the signal. However, this is rarely actually reached - most often, there are lags on the computers at both ends or there is a slower network in between the computers communicating over the wire.

This is why you get 2 MBps transfer speeds - you are dealing with all the other factors - computers on both ends doing the work, packets having lots of routing information that takes space rather than actual useful data exchange, slower networks in between your fast network and the computer you connect to, incompatible metrics for speed comparisons....

Basically, there are alot of factors that effect transfer speed and the wire is almost always not the limiting factor which is why you have a 100 Mbps wire but never get even close to what the average person would expect of 100 Mega Bytes per second transfer rates - they think, naturally, that their equipment is messed up or their ISP is screwing them, but its really just a misunderstanding of the numbers and the uncontrollable external effects.

You've received basically 2 different answers so far. One stating that it means 100 Megabytes per second and one saying that it means 100 Megabits per second. The correct answer is 100 Megabits per second. If it were megabytes, the B would be capitalized. So, you have a network connection with a maximum theoretical throughput of 100 Megabits per second.

BTW, 8 bits = 1 byte, so 100 Mbps = 12.5 MBps.

1 Kbps = 1024 bps (Bits per second)

1 bit is the smallest level of information, which is either 0 or 1. A combination of 8 bits forms a byte. Different combination of bits are used to represent different characters, numbers and special characters.

It stands for 100 Mbps (megabits per second) and should not to be confused with 100MBps (megabytes per second). It is a measure of bandwidth aka speed. To give you a rough idea of how fast this is.

Standard DSL Line download speed is around 1 to 7Mbps

100Mbps means Megabit Per Second basically it means how much data can travel down the cable in Megabit Per Second.

However in saying that you will never theoretically see 100 Megabit Per Second however would be nice lol.

1000Mbps is One Thousand Megabit Per Second which is faster then your average One Hundred Megabit Per Second.

Same again theoretically you will never see those speeds
