Because i think they are survivers from the first DHARMA expedition.

I am thinking that they are the results of the experiments of the first Dharma expedition. maybe they tried to mess around with genetics and the Others resulted. they are probably stronger and smarter than normal people but probably they cannot get off the island. my guess is that Ben tried to leave and that is how he got the tumor... It's just a guess...
My imagination works even further than that. do you remember the statue sayid, jin and sun saw on the water. the one with only for toes? what if the Others aren't even human........ maybe they are that black creature made of smoke. maybe they can get into the heads of the survivors and make them have dreams... like locke is having
