the film is about a mixed race girl who pretends to be white and tells everyone that her mother is the maid and pretends the other women whom they live with is her mom and gets beat by her boyfriend when he finds out who she really is. i need this film gor a college assignment.

There were two versions. The first starred Claudette Colbert as the white mother. Louise Beavers played the maid.

The second starred Lana Turner as mother to Sandra Dee's character. Susan Kohner played the black girl who passed for white. She was the maid's daughter. Juanita Moore played the maid.

I thought the girl was just light-skinned. I didn't think she was mixed race. That didn't happen much back then, and that would have been the focus of the story, I think, if that had been the case.

Plot summary:
In 1947 at Coney Island, down-on-her-luck actress Lora Meredith and her young daughter Susie meet coloured Annie Johnson and her daughter Sarah Jane. Annie is desperate for a place to live and offers to work as Lora's maid for food and lodging. Lora's luck begins to change as a result of their meeting and their two stories unfold across the years. However, Annie's problems start when Sarah Jane tries to pass as white.
