Desktop! If something goes wrong on a laptop, replacing the faulty part is very specialised. You either need to know something about the laptop, or take it to someone to repair it.

Desktops you can just pop open and replace the part with a similar part. And there are a lot more people out there that know how to replace something on a desktop than those who would dare tinker with a laptop. Chances are you know someone who will repair something in a desktop, and will do it for free or charge you very little.

The biggest con of a notebook is that you can pretty much only upgrade RAM. Nothing else. They are more difficult to troubleshoot and more expensive to fix.

The pros are pretty much just mobility.

The pros of a Desktop are the ability to upgrade virtually any component in addition to an easier method to troubleshoot hardware issues.

The cons are large size and no mobility.

I have a Thinkpad T60 2623-DAU with 2GB of RAM that works find for me. It retails around $1,500.

Laptop is portable - can take it with you, will cost you more though

Desktop - get more bang for your buck (dollar). easier to upgrade
