I got in my car to go to work yesterday and it wouldn't get in gear. I carpooled with my wife and when I got home I took a better look. The dipstick was out about an inch. It was slightly bowed and there was about a 16th inch deep ding in the metal itself. I have never noticed my stick being bent before and the ding was definitely pretty fresh.

Another odd thing is that the fluid was still full and the area around it didn't appear to have an fluid on it. I would expect if pressure built up enough to ding the metal as it was pushing out then I would have lost a good amount of fluid.

My car is a 1994 Honda Civic with an Automatic transmission. Thanks for any help.

i own a repair shop, and what causes this is they have a vent tube on top of them, and if it gets clogged up it doesn't have any other way to release the pressure that builds up in the transmission,so it blows the dip stick up so it can release it through the filler tube, that's what causes this there's nothing loose in it that causes this, but the vent tube on top of it needs cleaned badly if its doing this, good luck,i hope this help,s.

Wow this is just a guess but if the metal was dinged and it pushed the dip stick up I would say something let lose inside your trans and hit it and now what ever that is is in the way of your car going in gear.

You have something floating around in your transmission. Pressure would not cause a "ding". Have your transmission fluid and filter changed, but not flushed. Tell the tech that you think there may be something loose in the trans, and to watch for it as he drains it. He can likely tell you what it is, or where it came from.

drain Trans now. If the fluid is pink, the radiator cooler lines rotted and antifreeze is pouring into the trans. If not I;'d say the filter is plugged, and cooler lines are stopped up. I always buy a after market cooler and not use radiator coolers, because of that. Also the colder your trans is the longer trouble free miles.

sounds to me like its got too much pressure.i would check on the front pump,if it would not go into gear.sounds like its not pumping up.also check the filter.it might be clogged and not getting up to the bands and clutches.there should also be a vent tube(to expell heat).check to see if it got plugged.
