Unless you're a big gamer, go MAC. It's true, MACs may not be the most economical model, but sometimes you get what you pay for. I have worked on PCs and MACs, and there's no comparison. I hate PCs (no angry mail from anyone, please) and I love MACs. I've never known or heard of anyone sorry they went with Apple.

There are many ways to define "best". Best brand? Best durability? Or best value? Taking from a consumer point of view, it could mean striking a balance of good service, design, specs & price.
If thats the case, Apple's Macbook gets my first vote for hitting all the right spots: splendid design, reliable service, good specs & affordable rates as compared to their windows counterparts, which mostly falls short of either category.
However, the only windows laptop which might (argubly) be the best is the Thinkpad T60 series. They feature one of the best warranties out of the box for most models, feels as light as a Macbook, have reliable technologies with practical industrial designs to protect your laptop from damage & improve productivity. It's also priced very competitively given the above-mentioned features.
So take your pick. Ultimately, your decision of the best laptop could be down to which Operating System you prefer.

ASUS laptops are excellent, and certainly more cost effective than MACs.
