They instead promote "abstinence only" programs which prohibit discussion of birth control and safe sex - which have been proven to do little to stem the teenage rates of pregnancy, abortion, syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia.

When compared to rates of other industrialized nations with contraceptive education - the US is always last.

It's funny, even the pope came out in support of condoms to prevent aids, can you believe the United States is behind even the Catholic church on this issue, what is it going to take? A new president is my guess

(Rick N.) the pope did indeed say that condoms should be considered in the control of infectious disease, try to stay informed http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=1921670&CMP=OTC-RSSFeeds0312

Sex is a tool used to destroy family values. Or at least that is what I understand the issue to be.

I completely agree that Sex education is the way to reduce abortion rates. Without even looking at abortion the USA has a dramatically greater rate of Teenage Pregnancy than any other industrialized nation.

Some will say that it is because of media, or the fact that north American culture inundated with sexual imagery, however Canada has a QUARTER per capita teenage pregnancies.

Most countries have comprehensive sexual education programs that begin from an early age, you are given the resources and tools that allows a youngster to seek out safe sex methods.

"just say no" Has never been an effective tool. If it were there would be no war on Drugs.

Hey, don't generalize. I'm a conservative, for the most part, and I think abortion is wrong. However, I think the sex education programs in our schools should be two-pronged: Tell the students that the ONLY way to protect themselves 100% from STD's and unwanted pregnancies is to abstain from sex. Then, go ahead and teach them how to use condoms properly, and how and where to get birth control. But let them know that neither condoms nor birth control are 100% effective.
I don't think condoms should be handed out in the classroom, but I see nothing wrong with students being able to go to the school nurse to get them, or to be able to receive birth control and/or condoms from a place like Planned Parenthood.
I am NOT against birth control, and I am NOT against safer sex being taught in schools. However, to reiterate, using condoms and birth control is only SAFER sex, not safe sex. Safe sex is no sex at all.

I 'm the mother of a teenage girl.
I gave her tae quan do lessons so no one could force her to do anything she didn't want to do.
I told her from an early age that no matter what ,I would always love her and protect her. Told her she can always talk to me. I told her I absolutely support abortion for teenagers. and why. We discussed that I hope she will not ever have to make a decision like that.
I have given her the tools she needs and the support of a real parent. I know who she is with where she is going and when she will be back.

The answer is not what is the government doing. The answer is do not stop parenting as your children grow up.

Who's access to birth control is being blocked? I don't recall any laws prohibiting people from buying condoms or getting 'scripts for BCP.

Or are you saying that children should be given full access to all these things for free regardless of their parents' wishes?

There is only one 100% effective method that prevents conception and STDs - abstinence.

And I would love to see a legitimate study that shows that abstinence education doesn't affect anything.

That is not true of all conservatives. I am a conservative and I recognized that sex is going to occur. My only problem is when the local school board started teaching it to 12 year olds. I can see 15 year olds. But 12 is too young. Herb

what a great question i agree and think that if schools taught sex education and gave free access to birth control along with parents (who need to pull their head out of their as*) the rates of teen parenting and VD would be dramatically less but the government has cut funding from schools so much most don't even have art or music programs in school so i think it is up to us as parents to be the ones to speak with your children nieces nephews step children etc because if you believe that sex is for marriage you are living in denial kids are going to have sex wither you want them to or not so we can't rely on anyone but ourselves as parents to be up front and not only educate our own children about sexual education but supply birth control . i am still in awe of your question what a good one i can't wait to read the answers from all the people who think you not only immoral but that there kids are never gonna have sex nothing like looking at the issue with blinders on ....

It's because there corporations have taken control of our America. in forms of TV ads movies singers actors. Its now acceptable to have sex at a young age. But in the past it was acceptable to date young but not have sex. I think this is one of the biggest problems we have. Both partys will have to come together to pass bill that will help promote respect and dignity for all Americans big or small.

Conservatives not only want less abortions they want less SEX or no sex going on with young people who are not married. If kids get contraceptives they will want to have more sex because they won't have to worry about getting pregnant or getting any diseases. Conservatives want kids to be afraid to have sex and not having contraceptives helps do that.

Because we are the moral nation. What is wrong with telling our young people not to have sex? I mean how many parents actually tell them DO NOT have sex until you are married?? There has been a movement with the young people declaring they aren't having sex and they are proud of it. Sure they are still going to but it's long overdue to start saying it's not ok.
