Dreams actually occur in real time. A typical dream lasts 10-40 minutes

between 15 seconds and an hour, i have heard. You have a few REM, or dreaming periods, when you are asleep each night. As the night goes on, each gets longer. So some are short and some are long. You may even have a dream that seems as though it lasts a day in a five minute nap!

There is no set length. I've caught myself actually knowing I was dreaming but continuing it to see how it ends.
