As you will know by now, Egypt is a county in Africa.
It is the land of the oldest continuous civilization on Earth.
The name Egypt, is from the name the Greeks used, Aighyptos, and it is realtively new compared to the history of the land.
This dervives from the Ancient Egyptian name Hikuptah or "The Castle of Ptah".
Ptah was one of the major Gods in Ancient Egypt.
In particular, the God associated with the city of Memphis. Which was built in in early Pharonic times.
Many Egyptians, all through out history have refered to the country of Egypt as Misr, some still do.
The Capitol of modern Egypt is Cairo.
But the area where it stands today was only built on after the fall of the Egyptian civilization.
With it the fall of the former capitol of Memphis.
Memphis was a Pharonic city, that stood at the edge of the Delta were the Nile finally reaches the sea.
A new city was to be built in a new area, near to what was an older Egyptian sacred city.
It was to be establishied on land thought too unstable before that time to be built on.
The Nile had changed its course, by turning to the west.
The city was first built and named Fustat in 642 by the Arab conquerers.
It later became know as Quarhira,in 969 by the Fatimid rulers. Quarhira is where the modern name of Cairo comes from .
It developed into a great trade centre as it was now considered a safe area for building. It stood on and close by, a safe rocky elevated outcrop called the Muquattan hills.
The city ran along side the Nile's new course.
The ruins of sacred city of On or Heiliopolus known as "The City of The Sun" are now under the suburbs of northern Cairo.
Escavations are currently being undertaken.
The only memorial to the Ancients who foundered a city in the area is an obalisk dedicated to the Sun God Ra, who was the primary Egyptian God.A few foudation stones have also been located.
It is thought much of the city would have been used to build early Fustat.

Egypt itself is not a city but a country. If I can remember what I have read, it's the second oldest civilization, like 3500 B.C.E. It grew along the Nile, fertile ground protected from invaders by the surrounding harsh desert.

If you like Egypt and Egyptian History you will LOVE the Wilbur Smith series of books, River God, Warlock and Seventh Scroll. If you have second hand books on sale in charity shops etc in your area, go find them. They are worth the hunt. Read them in the correct order and the story he weaves is absolutely enthralling. Best series he has EVER written. My Dad loved them. Big read.
